Target’s learner’s level and age: Pre-intermediate / High school students
Students will be able to recognize the differences in subway timetable in both Seoul and Sydney
Students will know how to read the timetable and they can tell how to see the timetable to other people in real.
How to use:
This is for skimming and scanning practice using real subway timetables in Seoul and London respectively. The first one is from Seoul station to Incheon Airport and the other is to South hylton. To use these authentic materials, first give learners enough time to look through each table. Second, ask skimming questions for overall contents or general ideas. And then, go into the table deeply and ask scanning questions for specific information. Lastly, give a task that needs the information on the two timetables.
This practial activity is for teaching reading in order to develop specific reading skills such as skimming and scanning. Students can be engaged and invloved in this activity. Teachers can ask students some general questions for skimming for a gist and also ask more specific questions for scanning for a detail. first of all, students can have enough time to look through the both timetables. At this point, teachers try to help students to read the authentic timetable exactly.
Engage students with role-play and picture and let them guess the topic
Ask students experience or story of taking subways abroad and share the ideas with classmates
Give students guied questions for skimming skills and let them read the both timetable quickly. Here are the examples below.

Provide a worksheet for understanding specific questions and let students complete it. Here are examples below.
[Specific Questions for Scanning Skills]
– Which stations does the subway stop at fist running time in Korea?
– How many times does the subway stop from 4am to 6am at Epping station in Sydney?
– How many stations does the subway transper (9line) in Korea?
Make student’s own subway timetable or schedule and let them share with the classmates.
Make student read and speak the other’s made-timetable and check how students are going to understand the timetable
Through this activity, student can develop comprehensive reading and speaking skill.
